The Autobooks-Aerobooks Harry Morrow Award presented to Bob Wenz
WENZ HONORED WITH MORROW AWARD
Burbank, California
Saturday, July 12, 2008
West Coast 500cc Formula 3 stalwart Bob Wenz today had his named added to the Autobooks-Aerobooks Harry Morrow Award ... Bob had been a close friend and racing associate of the late Harry Morrow, the founder of Autobooks and one of the leading lights of early small-bore formula road racing in California.
The special Award is named in Morrow's honor, sponsored by Autobooks-Aerobooks, and presented to deserving individuals or organizations on an annual basis. Other winners include car owner John Streets, and association official Tom Cecil. The criterion(s) for the award are broad and aimed at recognizing exemplary service in the cause of 500cc formula car racing ... Now and in the past.
The Frank family from Fremont, California, who now owns and runs the car in vintage races across the country brought Bob's beautiful little Cooper MkX down to Burbank for the Saturday morning presentation
The eighty-one year old Wenz was caught totally off-guard by the award. He had traveled from his home in Los Gatos, California to attend what he thought was a tribute to Morrow, and found himself being honored with an award named for his old friend.
A man of few words, but possessing one of the most radiant smiles on the planet, he simply said: "Thank You" and beamed broadly when presented with the award while still comfortably seated in the cockpit of the seemingly factory-fresh 1956 Cooper. Wenz had driven the Norton Manx-powered thumping single from the alleyway behind Autobooks, up a short side street and onto the sidewalk in front of the legendary bookstore to the delight of all present!
Tina Van Curen and Chuck Forward, celebrating their first year of ownership of the now fifty-seven year old bookstore, are here pictured with Wenz.
The attached shots should be self-titling ... Wonderful day, beautiful car, great guy!
